Air Fryer
Now What?
They arrived punctually, well, more than punctually, annoyingly ahead of time, at 7:42 am for morning coffee.
They arrived punctually, well, more than punctually, annoyingly ahead of time, at 7:42 am for morning coffee.
‘We can’t go up. It’s too early’.
‘Do you want me to drive around the block?’
‘No, Alistair. Let’s just sit in the car and wait a while.’
They did while the seconds dawdled agonisingly, until Ida couldn’t bear it any longer, ‘Let’s go.’
Jo and Jack, attired in their usual black-and-white stylishness, extended a warm kiss-on-cheek. A table laden with croissants, raisin muffins, assortments of luscious fruit jams, and a plum tart beckoned.
Surveying the table setting, Ida settled comfortably into the Wishbone Ark, ‘Oh, darling, you always go into so much trouble. This was just meant to be a cup of coffee. No?’
‘It looks delicious. Thank you, Jo,’ Alistair hastily added.
As always, when the four Awesomes got together, conversation flowed. Pivoted by Jack’s astute knowledge, world events were analysed, local issues were debated, and most problems were solved with their sensible, logical solutions. Without an obvious reference, though it must have been the topic of a recent restaurant patronage, Jo could not contain her enthusiasm about an indispensable gadget, so indispensable that she has one in each of her numerous houses. ‘I do everything, absolutely everything in my air fryer.’
‘Ah,
really,’ uttered Ida and Alistair as if on command in unison.
‘Oh,
yes. I could not live without my air fryer. It is quick, clean, efficient, and
the food is oh, so yummy. My chicken is divine. Chicken casserole, chicken
rotisserie? Forget it. I will never prepare my chicken any other way than in my
air fryer. It is delicious, crisp, absolutely is. Isn’t it, Jack?’
‘hmm’, Jack nodded in drawn-out response.
Jo got out of her chair, ‘Come, I'll show you mine.’ Ida and Alistair followed their hostess into the butler’s pantry, while Jack inspected his manicured nails.
‘You pull out the tray for your dish. You touch the program setting here. If you like, you can watch its progress through the window. And voilà, draw out your meal when the time is up, and just enjoy your feast. You can also bake a cake in it.’
‘That’s it. Sounds fabulous. We’ll go and get one this morning, won’t we, Alistair?’ Alistair nodded enthusiastically.
‘I
got mine at Myers.’
‘Myers, here we come,’ Alistair steered Ida towards the hall. A hearty thank-you, embraces, goodbyes, and pledges for more get-togethers followed the couple back to their car. Without haste but with great purpose, Alistair navigated the car towards the shopping centre, where they found Myers, the white goods department, the eager salesperson, purchased the coveted item, and raced home.
Alistair removed the air fryer from the box and placed it on the kitchen bench. Inspecting the interior, he lifted the tray. Ida pulled off the plastic foil from the display board. Stepping back, they considered their new acquisition. Ida pensively looked into Alistair’s eyes, ‘Now what?’
Lifting his shoulders, raising his eyebrows from the instruction booklet, he responded, ‘Do you think we could get somebody to do this for us?'
